Halloween Fun!!

Lovely holiday fun! We decided to have a party with yum-yum apple punch (read: mostly apple flavored alcohol) and themed snacks (except for the potato chips... unless you call them fried golden dragon scales...) which were very good. So here's the one pic I took of myself (and it's not completely accurate due to postable picture size and the fact that it was taken after I got drunk and so not the most flattering of poses and you can't see my kick-ass high-heeled shoes or fishnet stockings and maybe not even recognise that I'm wearing a spiked and studded collar above a lovely corset... *gasp*) here for your enjoyment.

Does anyone else find it difficult to insert all these "cute" little made for blogger funnies, or is it just me? Cause every so often when I actually try and make the cpu do what I want, I get these error messages like there's no matching start to some end character that I apparently can't recognize. これは日本語を翻訳するべきであるよりテキストを読むことを堅くする. Half-Nekkid Faerie

Before anyone decides to comment on my spelling, let it be noted that 'faerie' can also be spelled 'fairy', 'fairie', and 'faery' depending on exactly what you're looking at, author preference or location, and what magic the being in question has.

Anyways... I got the idea to do a pic like this a looong time ago. This is me as a faerie with the dark form of the Eastern Tiger Swallowtail (papilio glaucus), wings taken from here. There are several wonderful examples of these on Elfwood. Do go and browse. If you don't like faeries there are always mermaids popping up! :D They make me jealous!!!

Funny thing is, I feel there is not much story behind this tattoo. I got it about four years ago to mark my first real job (away from home and my mother's influence, read: interference). It's a crossbreed of a traditional english dragon (wings and general body shape) and a chinese dragon (antlers, furred tail and the fact that it's chasing a pearl) and it took me about a year to decide that I'd drawn it the way I wanted it. I dragged a friend of mine with me (he'd suggesed that I get it done at Saint Tattoo) so I'd have someone to glare at rather than pay attention to the... *shiver*... needle. I put NO ONE's art on my body other than my own.

My "firey old man" (henceforth, FOM) took this pic while we were watching monday night football. He likes this jersey. :D

Here it is so everyone can see it clearly.

I figured eventually I would do a couple of these. I almost never take off my rings (any of my jewelry actually). Through the rush of getting out the door this morning and my forgetfulness last night (bowling requires me to take that one ring off and I'd slipped it into my pocket), I forgot to put back on my thumb ring. I feel naked...
There will be something better up next week. I promise. ;D *sly smile*

Part 1: The "Great Riddler"

Albashion tried his best not to glare at the Headmistress as she recited the lore as handed down from mother to child for generation upon generation. All of it seemed rather useless. He would much rather be outside the nest learning how to best other males than inside it learning theorums of magic. How was he supposed to be much good at it anyways? He was a violent purple like his father Theshkathe but had quite a bit of his mother's darker coloring.

"I wish you would brood this hard on any of the questions I've posed you over the years." Albashion focused on her face finally and lowered his head, abashed. "You have more potential than any other male child I've taught for many a year, including your father, despite your dark markings and darker brooding sessions. Riddles are to focus your mind into a tight pattern. Eventually all of them make sense." With that she tapped him on the end of his snout.

"But why must it be soooo boring most of the time?"

Headmistress Sshassae smiled and coughed out what ammounted to laughter. "Because your soul grasps the picture in its entirety without noting the parts wilst the mind must struggle to see from one loop to the next and can never make the parts a whole."

"So the mind..."

"Go on."

He bit his lip as he tried to phrase it as she would. "The mind is like a sparrow on the branch or on the wing. On the branch it can't see the forest for the tree. On the wing, it can't see the tree for the forest."

"Just so, just so. The stooping hawk can see and understand both." Another bark of laughter. "Ah, you've earned your bit of rest away from me today. Tomorrow you are to study the meaning of a circle and recite an original, original mind you, rhyme on the twists you make in a nodus of one line on the next."

Power the lad had indeed, read in every line of him from snout to tailtip and from wing to wing and between as he lilted off to torment one of his clutchmates. No wonder none of the mothers wanted to foster out this one. Likely by the time he became adult they would have his harem and malemates all chosen out to his benefit. Perhaps they would allow her to stay on with him as Headmistress to his future clutches. She was definitely out of breeding age and the experiences she and her haremmates had gone through need not be repeated by the next generation.

The females have magic and in the same quantities as their male counterparts but are not so brilliantly scaled to show off said talents and are mostly discouraged from actively using the more aggressive of the magics. Instead, they have an entire range of defensive magics keyed into their feminine pheremones and unusable to a large degree by males (there are some magics keyed into male pheremones but as they are by and large minor, mirrored things the advantage here is given into the females). The coloring for females isn't influenced by the strength of the magic they could potentially weild as most are a dull brown or silvery grey pattern to blend well with the trees (many of whom resemble our birch and firs around their nesting areas). They are the keepers of the community lore and the nurturers of their people's future. They have no need for flashy or showy colors (although many show magpie-like tendecies) as the females' prefered fighting ground is upon the mental planes.

 Mississippi State player goes into the bank to cash a check. The teller asks if he can identify himself. The kid glances at his reflection in the window and says, "Yeah, it's me."

 Why is it so hard to convict Alabama players of any crime? All the DNA's the same, and there are no dental records.

 Two Arkansas players hitchhike into town one day and see sidewalks for the first time.
"You can't blame these city folks for not farming," one of them says. "This ground's too dern hard to plow."

 Kentucky player shows up for class soaking wet. "Just following directions in the label of my shirt," he explains to the professor. "It said 'Wash and Wear.' "

Typically it is the males of the species that wield the magic in their communities. They are quite easily marked as they have colorful, complexly patterned hides. Usually strength can be measured first, by brightness of scale color (someone royal blue primary tone versus someone neon blue primary) and second by pattern complexity (someone with a mottled hide versus one with a dimondbacked hide). It is quite unlikely to find a male of a dark, mottled hue performing any of the "high" magics. Sometimes their patterning is so complex it forms knotwork, like as found in Celtic art, that they call "nodos". Nodos are commonly found on their ceremonial acoutrements and are used as meditation tools.

Let us refocus on elabi adumbratum. It's development is the most obvious reasoning behind this draconis being given the designation venificus (magical/poisonous) rather than magus (magical). The species now uses what is best termed magic but it is a natural emination from the same glands that produces its defensive poison. Said poison is concentrated along the spine and is excreted along runnels in the large dorsal spikes. Once the liquid gains contact with the air it exhudes a rather spicy scent and a sense of contained power. Users of the lesser magics can only harness the power emanated or the poison itself (much as the original owner of the liquid would have). Users of the dark magics use the poison in much the same way as they would a sample of blood or other bodily fluid and the more powerful magi can use a sample from a dead leaf, dried and barely detectable, to influence their will upon an entire family group.

Fresh water dwelling aquae dulcis and oceanic aquae sal salis are the most direct decendents of the earliest forms of draconi and evolved similarly into the elabi, herbosus and montis that are found today. Dulcis is mirror-scaled and has almost abnormally large fins for the size of its body. It is warm blooded and acts as do the whales of our world: living in family pods, rearing live young, and beaching on occasion for unknown reasons. Sal salis is cold blooded and is basically a rainbow-scaled water snake that resembles a lionfish when in display and a great white shark when hunting.

The little known cousin to mons montis is terrigena interior (born inside/from the earth) which looks similar to a miniature montis with enlarged adamantine hard protection plates and neck ridges. These creatures, however, have no wings, not even vestigal ones. They also are blind, relying on scent marking and special vibration sensors located primarily at the base of each of their "hairs" to move around. Terri is not prolific, each female lays usually only a single fertile egg at any mating, and never lives in groupings (not even as juveniles). Males are considerably smaller than the females, generally full grown males are only half the size of a juvenille female. They have a harder time in life as many die when attempting to mount a female that has recently mated, ending their life around the age of fifteen. Male terri also don't have set territories like the females, but they do try to stay out of each other's way as much as possible. Females in uncontested territory live to around eighty years old and are fully mature at three years but don't begin mating until they're around ten. Usually there is only one fertile egg laid (if there are more the female will relocate her territory to accomodate the male better and protect him, if possible, while he resides there) and the young is raised at the edge of the mother's territory. At about six months old when it first possibly can protect and feed itself it is forcibly removed from the nest. If it is male it runs the chance of meeting its absentee father and being killed outright as it will probably end up a rival on the father's usual route.

The mountain dwelling mons montis (great rock) is similar to elabi in that it's warm blooded but it seems to be "furred" and has greatwings large and powerful enough for flight. These draconi only live in small family groups during winter while mating and preparing for their litters (they act more like puma than lions) and the males leave in the spring after providing usually only a single meal for the young. Herbosus, being cold-blooded, lays eggs rather than birthing live young but because conditions in the winter are so unfavorable they, like many other plains dwellers, don't start mating until winter is half over so that there is less chance that there will be eggs wasted.

The forest dwelling draconis variant (elabi adumbratum or 'shadow glider') is the one featured in my "creation station". It is a warm-blooded creature originally only able to glide from limb to limb as its wings were not nearly large enough for flight. Even had they been, they would have only been a hindarance as these creatures need to be able to quickly compact their wings to drop into the entrance holes of their enclaves. Its cousin on the plains (herbosus natator, 'grassy swimmer') is cold-blooded and migratory (even though the summers provide exceptional sun and heat, the winters leave the sun blocked out for much of the day and temperatures able to freeze most creatures should they stop moving for a long peroid) but have sufficient wingspan for flight. Both live in family groups much like horses, with the group being predominantly made up of females and their young but having more than one unrelated adult male (with the harsh living conditions at times, being limited to a single male would prove detrimental).

Draconis' world is almost as old as our own. The creatures in it are proportionately larger, as their world is significantly larger. The forests are all populated by trees as large and larger than our redwoods. Plains animals are mostly larger than their forest cousins while the abundant sea creatures are the largest of all. Mountain creatures are the smallest but the hardiest but for the populous of the inner-earth. Of all the creatures, the ones with the most adaptability and intelligence are variants of the draconis venificus line.
